2.1.3 The Serras

Polunin & Smythies escrevem  (p. 46-47):

The Serras,  the hills that make up the northern two-thirds of the Algarve, are built of schists of the carboniferous period (except for the Monchique syenite and foyaite), and are separated from the limestone zone to the south by a narrow band of Tertiary sandstones and conglomerates. These hills consist of the Serra do Caldeirão in the east, S. do Malhão  in the centre, and S. de Monchique  in the west, separated by the low land of the Sao Marcos depression. Their acid soils support a quite different vegetation from that developed on the limestone further south.

Lge. u. a.

Rhododendron ponticum [3]

Polunin & Smythies  escrevem em 1987 (p.47-48):

The Serra de Monchique  is the highest part of the range, with the twin peaks of Foia , 902 m, and Picota , 744 m, both formed of foyaite and syenite, surrounded by schists. The western end of the Serra has the highest annual rainfall of the Algarve, and the abundant water available from perennial springs has led to the building of many rich irrigated terraces. Between the two peaks nestles the village of Monchique at 460 m, where fine camellia trees are grown, while lower down near the foot of the hills on the south side, lies the spa of Caldas de Monchique at 200m, which was known to the Romans.

This is one of the classical botanical localities of the Algarve, but unfortunately most of the original oak forests of Q. canariensis  and * Q. faginea  that once clothed the hills have long since disappeared, though some chestnut coppice is still maintained on the slopes of Picota. Today these hills appear well wooded owing to the extensive plantations of Eucalyptus  and Pinus pinaster , while olive groves and cork woods are grown up to altitudes of 550 m. There are also small plantations of the creamy-white-flowered Acacia melanoxylon ; and the more ornamental yellow-flowered species have been planted along the roadsides. Of the two peaks, Foia  is accessible by a good road to the summit, rather bare and uninteresting and now much cluttered up with television masts, but the lower slopes are more rewarding; Picota  is wilder and more interesting than Foia: one has to walk up most of the way from Monchique.

The more conspicuous plants include * Paeonia broteroi , which flowers before the end of April, and * Rhododendron ponticum  flowering at the same time or a little later in gullies, and the two tall white heathers * Erica lusitanica  and * E. arborea  which may start flowering in February. The fanner seems to be the commoner of the two. but E. arborea  is dominant on the upper slopes of Picota, and in sheltered places grows to 4 m in height. * Arbutus unedo  grows luxuriantly, and a type of brandy, medronheiro , is distilled from the berries in Monchique. The primrose, P. vulgaris  is found here and there, notably in the chestnut coppice on the lower slopes of Picota. Of the bulbs. * Scilla monophyllos  is conspicuous everywhere in April ; * Romulea bulbocodium  is also abundant, notably on the summit of Foia; and the Spanish bluebell, * Endymion hispanicus , is locally common.

As one climbs up Picota one passes for two-thirds of the way through farms and chestnut coppice, where the most conspicuous plants in spring , in addition to those already mentioned, are * Saxifraga granulata  on walls, the two tall spurges Euphorbia characias  and E. amygdaloides , Anchusa undulata , and Asphodelus morisianus . On the rocky summit slopes, above the limit of cultivation, the most colourful shrubs are the golden-yellow * Halimium commutatum , the purple * Erica ciliaris,  as well as pink * Cistus crispus.

The rare tree Myrica faya  grows here and there, usually by streams, on Picota, but we have only seen one specimen on Foia. It resembles the Strawberry Tree,   Arbutus unedo , but is easily distinguished from it by its darker green and narrower leaves.

Other more unusual plants of this area are Campanula primulifolia , Centaurea longifolia , Senecio grandiflorus , the handsome robust, white-flowered * Astragalus lusitanicus , and the very rare Leucojum longifolium  which may now have become extinct. * Erica ciliaris  has recently been found on Foia.

In Gebüschen wachsen: (L) Leuzea longifolia  Hfifgg. Lk., (L) Campanula primulaefolia  Brot., Lonicera hiispanica  B. R., (L) Lavandula viridis  Ait., Origanum **virens  Hffgg. Lk., Calamintha ** menthaefolia  Host, Phlomis purpurea L., Anchusa granatensis Boiss., Lithospermum *prostratum  Lois. (südwestlichster  Standort dieser nordatlantischen Art!, Drosophyllum lusitanicum  Lk. (b.
