Black Bryony (Tamus communis, syn. Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin) is a flowering plant, in the yam family Dioscoreaceae, native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia.

Growth

It is a climbing herbaceous plant growing to 2-4 m tall, with twining stems. The leaves are spirally arranged, heart-shaped, up to 10 cm long and 8 cm broad, with a petiole up to 5 cm long. It is dioecious, with separate male and female plants. The flowers are individually inconspicuous, greenish-yellow, 3-6 mm diameter, with six petals; the male flowers produced in slender 5-10 cm racemes, the female flowers in shorter clusters. The fruit is a bright red berry, 1 cm diameter. Its fairly large tuber is, like the rest of the plant, poisonous.

Os frutos de Tamus communis confundem-se facilmente com os da Bryonia dioica da família das Cucurbitaceae que são igualmente tóxicos.

Calamintha is a genus of plants that belongs to the family Lamiaceae. There are about eight species in the genus (around 30 before revisions in taxonomy) which is native to the northern temperate regions of Europe, Asia and America.

Calamintha species are known for their medicinal uses as a stimulant, diaphoretic, expectorant, antipyretic and sedative. Some species are reported to possess strong antibacterial and antifungal activities. The major compounds in the oils of various Calamintha species belong to the C-3 oxygenated p-menthanes; these are: menthone, isomenthone, pulegone, piperitone, piperitone oxide, piperitenone, piperitenone oxide. Perez-Alonso et al. (1992) reported on Calamintha oil rich in carvone and 1,8cineole. Great variations in oil composition occur both in the Calamintha genus both inter- and infraspecific.
